Who runs the app

What stays on your device
Your decks, your answers and your progress are stored on your phone. Studying, importing and exporting decks work offline and send nothing to us. There is no sync between devices.
What leaves your device, and when
Four paid features send text to our server: Explain, Simpler, Ask and Generate. Nothing is sent until you press one of these buttons. The app asks for your consent before the first time, and you can say "Not now".
- Explain, Simpler and Ask send the card and what you typed or marked.
- Generate sends the topic or the text you pasted.
Our server passes this text to Claude, an AI service by Anthropic, to write the answer. We do not use your text to train anything.
We do not show advertising. There are no tracking SDKs. We do not collect crash reports.
What our server stores
- An account ID. It is anonymous until you sign in with Apple.
- If you sign in with Apple, the email address Apple shares with us. It may be a private relay address.
- Your subscription status and a link between your App Store transaction and your account.
- Usage counters, such as how many free decks you have used and how many requests you have made, so we can apply limits.
- The messages of an Ask thread. You can delete a thread.
- Basic details of each deck you generate: title, number of cards and date. The cards themselves stay on your phone.
Explain and Simpler replies are not stored. Our server logs do not contain your topic, text, answers or messages.
If you report a reply, the report and the reply text are kept so we can review them. After you delete your account the report stays, but it is no longer linked to your account.
Third parties
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases and subscriptions.
- Google Firebase: account sign-in, our database and server functions, and App Check, which protects the service from abuse.
- Anthropic: the AI service that writes replies to the text you send.
Each of these has its own privacy policy.
How long we keep data
We keep server data while your account exists, until you delete it, an Ask thread, or the account. We have not set an automatic expiry for it. Data on your phone stays until you delete it or remove the app.
Delete your account and data
In the app, open Settings and choose Delete account. This removes your account on our server, its stored threads and deck details, and the link to your subscription. Cards on your phone stay. To delete cards, delete the decks or remove the app.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it in Apple Settings first. See the support page.
You can also ask us by email to delete your data.
Children
Own Words is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you think a child has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update this page and its effective date.
